The author inadvertently introduced this species as new to science by describing several characters and using the species name. Zelinka (1908) did not mention any locations, so a type locality and type specimens do not exist. Genus and species name did not agree in gender at this time and were subsequently emendet in Zelinka (1928).

Taxonomy Synonymy according to Neuhaus (2013, p. 286):
P. flaveolatus Zelinka, 1928: pp. 323–325, Pl. 13: Figs 1–4;
P. flaveolatus Zelinka, 1908: Fig. 10, nomen nudum;
Hyalophyes flaveolatus Zelinka, 1928: pp. 340–341, Pl. 7:
Figs 1–2, = juvenile stage of P. flaveolatus;
Lang 1936: p. 6, Figs 5–7.
This is partly erroneus, because Zelinka inadvertently introduced Pycnophyes flaveolata [sic!] Zelinka, 1908 by describing several morphological characters and usnig the species name. Subsequently, Zelinka (1928) emendet the name to P. flaveolatus making the gender of genus and species agree. [details]
