Taxonomic remark This is an extremely dubious species that is most certainly a junior synonym of Sphaeronectes koellikeri. The specific identification is based on two, rather poor, photographs. There is no detailed description and the species is said to differ from S. koellikeri, only by the fact that in tasmanica the hydroecium opens "orally" while the poor drawing of S. koellikeri (reproduced from Grossmann et al, 2012)appears to indicate that that is not the case for that species. Almost any other drawing or photograph of S. koellikeri will show that the attempted distinction is invalid. I believe that, according to the rules, this species remains valid until a rebuttal appears in print. [details]
