Description Lives in the open sea, but may also be found along coastal areas. Prefers cool waters from 7-16° C but tolerates 21° C and more. In tropical offshore areas it occurs at depths of 80-220 m; in warm-temperate areas they occur close to shore and near the surface (Ref. 5485). A scavenger/ predator that feeds mainly on squid, but also on bony fishes, small sharks, pelagic crustaceans, algae, and crustaceans (Ref. 5213). Length of 650 cm is unconfirmed. Marketed fresh, dried/salted and frozen; meat utilized for consumption, hides for leather and fins for soup (Ref. 9987). [details]
