Editor's comment The date of publication of 1828 is widely used for the basionym Hydra verticillata. This is the date of publication of the text, and (p.203) refers to the 1822 publication of the plates (Plate XLVII, figs 1, 2). The earlier publication is a valid indication of the name. (D.P.
