Description Marine. Some in brackish water. Distribution: Indo-Pacific region. Elongate and cylindrical fishes with depressed head. Usually ridges and spines are present on head. Mouth large with the lower jaw jutted. Gill openings wide. Scales ctenoid. First dorsal fin with 6-9 spines; 11-14 soft rays in second dorsal fin. Anal fin soft rays 11-14. Pelvic fins widely set apart. A single spine in pelvic fin; soft rays 5. No free rays on pectoral fin. Swim bladder lacking. Vertebrae 27. [details]
