Taxonomy As pointed out by Hilbig (2000:201), the validity of Eclysippe Eliason depends on Fauvel's original description of four pairs of branchiae in the type species, Lysippe vanelli, being observed incorrectly, as Eliason's new material had three branchial pairs (examined by Eliason from a northern locality distant from Morocco, where L. vanelli was collected). Eliason did not re-examine Fauvel's specimens, but he suspected that the fourth branchiae of Fauvel's specimens (only the bases of the branchiae remained) were instead the paleal notopodia. The concept in current use of the genus and of E. vanelli relates to Eliason's material. Jirkov (2011) treated the genus as valid without comment. The location of Fauvel's L. vanelli syntypes is not known, so the assumed actual morphology cannot be verified [details]

Synonymy Day (1964:118) tentatively placed Eclysippe in Samythella Verrill, and later (1973:113) confirmed this synonymy. Jirkov (2001:483) newly placed Eclysippe as a synonym of Pterolysippe.
