Editor's comment The published genus of Kinberg belongs Eunicidae. A much later confusion with Terebellidae species arises from McIntosh, 1922 citing Montagu 1808 Ms names which used Montagu's Amphiro name, a never published genus name, and Hartman (1959:495) assigning these (correctly) in Terebellidae. The terebellid Amphiro Montagu remained unpublished by Montagu as in 1819 he published at least some of his 'Amphiro' epithets as combinations in Terebella. See Amphiro McIntosh, 1922 for the terebellid Amphiro names. [details]Publication date Although Neave gives the genus date as 1864, the beginning page p.559 of Kinberg's article has 'communicata d. 15 Dec 1864', so publication in early 1865 seems most probable. 1865 is the year used by Hartman (1948) [details]
Synonymy Hartman (1948:81) examined Kinberg's specimen of type species Amphiro atlantica, and determined it was a Marphysa (5 antennae). Amphiro is thus invalid. However, Amphiro pacifica with 3 antennae possibly is not a Marphysa.
