Classification Ehlers (1874, 1875) does not place Heterospio into a family, so it has never been in family Spionidae as would be suggested by his choice of genus name. In his full description in 1875 Ehlers comments that it is doubtful Heterospio belongs in Spionidae as the bristles are capillary and hooked bristles are missing. He also says that (transl) "If one were to take the bristle groups into account alone, the animal would be placed among the cirratulids". His insight was correct as currently Heterospio species are regarded as close to the cirratulids. [details]
