Description The original description in Hartman (1965: 139): "Paradoneis resembles Paraonis Grube in lacking a prostomial antenna. It differs in that notopodia have furcate setae accompanied by pointed setae, in postbranchical and some branchial segments, and neuropodia have slender, distally pointed setae only." [details]

Diagnosis Magalhães et al (2018): "Body long, thin, slightly enlarged anteriorly. Prostomium conical; median antenna absent; prostomial ciliary bands present or absent; longitudinal nuchal grooves along posterior prostomium margin; peristomium indistinct or distinct dorsally; eyes present or absent. Branchiae from setigers 4-7, numbering 6-40 or more pairs. All segments with notopodial postchaetal lobes; neuropodial lobes absent. Notochaetae include capillaries and either lyrate chaetae, modified spines, or simple curved spines; neurochaetae capillaries, a few species with curved neuropodial spines in posterior segments. Pygidium rounded terminally, with three anal cirri."
Note that the diagnosis allows several more chaetal types than in Hartman's original circumscription. [details]

Synonymy Paradoneis is invalid in the monograph of Strelzov (1973). He placed Paradoneis and Paraonides under Cirrophorus Ehlers, 1908. The morphological cladistic analyis of Reuscher (2013, unpublished thesis) also placed Paradoneis as a synonym of Cirrophorus. However, molecular data of Langeneck et al. (2019) indicated two groups present but did not split species placed in Paradoneis cleanly from those placed in Cirrophorus, and there is thus further work to be done clarifying the relationships. Other authors have added new species in 2018-2019. Magalhães et al (2018) suggested that the finding of Langeneck et al. needed to be validated with data from a higher number of species. [details]
