Diagnosis Original diagnosis by Malmgren (1867: 93): ''Corpus elongatum sublineare postice sensim paullum attenuatam. Lobus cephalicus brevis parte frontale parum elevata subrectangulare apice transversa. Antennae nullae. Tentaculum haud conspicuum. Oculi nulli. Tubercula setigera similia pinnis compressis parum discretis, labiis minutis, magnis foliaceis modo in segmentis 4 anticis obviis. Branchiae, paria 4, liberae in segmentis 4 anticis obviae, dorso adnatae, paris primi et quarti aequales ceteris longiores pinnatae, paris secundi et tertii multo breviores aequales filiformes. Setae in segmentis anticis modo capillares in utraque pinna, in posticis segmentis capillares et uncinatae in pinna ventrali, modo capillares in dorsali. Setae capillares versus apicem attenuatum curvatum anguste limbatae in segmentis anticis, in posticis rectae tenuissime attenuatae haud limbatae. Uncini rostrati apice limbati, vertice unidentati. Seta infima rami inferioris in segmentis mediis linearis falcis instar curvata.''[details]
Etymology Prionospio is composed by the Greek noun prion, meaning 'saw', followed by the name of the genus Spio Fabricius, 1785, type of the family Spionidae, and refers presumably to the saw-like appearance in profile of the pinnate branchiae of the genotype, Prionospio steenstrupi Malmgren, 1867 (see Malmgren, 1867: plate IX fig. 55B). [details]
Grammatical gender Feminine. Names ending in Spio, named after a female mythological entity, must be feminine, and Prionospio species-group names when adjectival have almost invariably been treated as feminine. There are three original name exceptions, and they have all been corrected in later publications. [details]
