Note The type species of Odontosyllis is O. gibba...
Type species The type species of Odontosyllis is O. gibba Claparède, 1863 by monotypy. However, the type species is wrongly recorded as Syllis fulgurans Audouin and Milne Edwards 1833 in three influential works, namely in the Hartman Catalogue (1959: 212), in Day's monograph (1967: 260), and in Fauchald's guide (1977: 83). It is unclear how this error arose. Claparède (1864: 554) modified his original diagnosis to include Mediterranean Port-Vendres specimens, recombined the older species Syllis fulgurans into Odontosyllis, and did not mention his original Normandy species directly. Quatrefages (1866: 648 appendix) included O. fulgurans and O. dugesiana in Odontosyllis, but had included (without explanation) the type species O. gibba as recombined in Syllis (1866: 32).Possibly these actions combined partly led to Odontosyllis gibba being overlooked as type subsequently. Pettibone (1963: 122) correctly recorded the type as Odontosyllis gibba. [details]
