Type locality Gulf of Naples, Mediterranean Sea.

The type locality of Syllis gracilis is many times considered as being the Adriatic Sea. However Grube (1840: 2) says that unless stated, all the material of his 1840 work comes from the Gulf of Naples: "Endlich habe ich es nicht für überflüssig erachtet, von jeder Species den genauern Fundort mitzutheilen: ist er nicht ausdrücklich genannt, so erhielt ich sie aus dem Golf von Neapel" ('Finally I have not considered necessary to give for each species a more exact location: if it is not specifically mentioned, I have found it in the Gulf of Naples' [translation by the Editor]). [details]
Type material One possible syntype deposited at the MPW (No. 395). The label is incomplete, with the fragment with the place of collecting missing (Wiktor, 1980). However, it was identified by A.E. Grube.  [details]
