Holthe (1986: 135-136) adds (spelling of graffii corrected): "As these two forms of Proclea [P. graffii and P. malmgreni] have been lumped for so many years, all information concerning their distributions is uncertain. As it is not known whether their distributions overlap, I have chosen to consider them as two species, and not as two subspecies. It seems probable that P. graffii is a temperate-boreal species and P. malmgreni a boreal-arctic one. I have not had the opportunity to examine Ushakov's (1965) material, so it is still an open question whether P. graffii extends its distribution into arctic waters." [details]

Taxonomy Solowetia malmgreni Ssolowiew, 1899 was considered to be a junior synonym of Proclea graffii (Langerhans, 1884) by Southern (1914), but later it was restored as valid in the genus Proclea by Holthe (1986). Though, the acceptance of its validity does not seem to be unanimous, and while Jirkov (2001) keeps Solowetia malmgreni under that synonymy, Nogueira et al. (2010) consider the species to be valid.
