Taxonomy Lévi (1953) subdivided the Demospongiae in three subclasses based on reproductive characters. Tetractinomorpha were defined as oviparous sponges. As gradually more information has become available on reproductive modes of sponges, ovipary was demonstrated to be a marker at most for lower taxa (family, genus). The Systema Porifera suggested to abandon the subclass level until such time that new markers would become available.  [details]
