Homonymy Although authorship of this species traditionally was given to Pallas, it is in fact a junior primary homonym of Spongia oculata Linnaeus, 1759. Pallas did cite Linnaeus as one of the sources for the name and in the 1767 edition Linnaeus cited Pallas' record. He also referred to the locality from which Pallas recorded Spongia oculata. Junior primary homonyms are permanently unavailable, but Linnaeus' senior name remains available. It is plausible both records concern the same species. [details]

[details]Type designation De Weerdt (2002: 865) mentions BMNH 1841.1.13.46 as a possible Pallas specimen, not as a Linnaeus specimen. Neither author has left recognizable and properly labeled specimens, so the status of this material remains spculative. De Weerdt (l.c.) did not use the term 'lectotype', so any claim for type status is so far unsubstantiated. [details]
