Taxonomy Calthropella geodioides differs only from C. simplex, in possessing an unstable complement of single oxeas, without structural position in the skeleton, often broken, and occasionally absent. van Soest et al. (2010) maintain separate species Calthropella (C.) simplex and C. (C.) geodioides, because they did not examine the type of the former, but Sollas’ description of it makes it clear that it differs from C. (C.) geodioides in two doubtful features, lack of dichocalthrops (rarely present in C. (C.) geodioides) and oxeas (unstable presence in C. (C.) geodioides). Especially the shape of the globular asters in both is so similar that conspecificity is likely (modified from van Soest et al., 2010). [details]
