Biology Type of larval development: planktotrophic, inferred from multispiral protoconch. [details]

Diagnosis Shell up to 13 mm although generally smaller (6-7 mm). Protoconch conical with 4.5 whorls, 500-550 ¼m high and with several poorly impressed subsutural striae. Teleoconch with up to 8 convex whorls and deep suture, with 14-15 laminar ribs per whorl, forming an angular projection just below the suture, and with numerous, clearly impressed spiral striae in the interspaces. Colour of protoconch brown, of teleoconch white.
This species is extremely similar to E. tibrii(de Boury, 1890), and may be virtually indistinguishable from it without the protoconch. It grows slightly larger but the most diagnostic character is that the protoconch of E. tiberii is 0.7 to 0.8 times smallerand has a clear substural thread instead of several poorly marked spirals . Both species are easily separated when present in the same sample, but E. algerianum clearly predominates in the Alboran sea and E. tiberii on the Lusitanian seamonts.  [details]
