Biology Type of larval development: planktotrophic, inferred from multispiral protoconch. [details]

Diagnosis Shell solid, up to 100 mm high, spindle-shaped, with a slightly cyrtoconoid spire. Teleoconch of 7-8 whorls with a sculpture of broad, flattened spiral cords, about equivalent to the intervening spaces, and with faint axial folds which are still fainter on the body whorl. There are usually 1-3 thick varixes on the last whorls. Aperture rather small; the outer lip externally bordered by the last varix, thickened inside and provided with 8-10 strong denticles. Parietal and columellar areas forming a rather thin callus, with a distinct plait at the adapical end and indistinct wrinkles on the remainder. Siphonal canal rather long and open throughout by a broad slit. Colour white, usually with some brown blotches on the edge of the aperture; outer surface covered with a dense, velvety periostracum on fresh shells. [details]

Distribution Eastern Atlantic, from southern Portugal to southern Morocco and the Canary Islands; Mediterranean; uncommon in 20-100 m. Josephine, Ampère and Seine seamounts, rare in 140-280 m [details]
