Spelling Salazar-Vallejo et al (2019: 17-18 of 35) change the spelling of Hesionella "mccullochae" to "maccullochae", justifying this by reference to a document on formation of names guidelines at the ICZN website. However, there is no Code rule requiring a modification to "maccullochae" This is an unjustified emendation, but becomes an available name (Article 33.2) with its own authorship, because the authors had the clear intent to adopt a new spelling. Hesionella "mccullochae" was named by Hartman (1939) after her colleague Irene McCulloch, and has the correct feminine gender suffix. A recommendation in the 1985 3rd edition code suggested changing "McC" to "macc" when forming such names, but this was only advice (perhaps dubious in this case) for forming names at the time of publication. It is not a license to change a long-used spelling many decades later [G Read, June 2020] [details]
