Validity Lamouroux did not assign a type for the genus. B. prominens is often quoted, in error, as the type: the earliest designation of B. prominens as the type appears to have been by Gregory (1896), postdating a designation of B. diluviana made by Reuss (1867). The identity of B. diluviana is obscure (as with B. prominens), hence Berenicea is best regarded as a nomen dubium. [details]
