Synonymy This species is sometimes considered a subspecies of M. edulis. However, Ahmad & Beardmore (1976) have demonstrated, using arguments from electrophoresis (enzyms), that M. galloprovincialis is a separate species. According to Verduin (1979), there are also conchiological arguments to keep the two species distinct. Ahmad & Beardmore (1976) and Verduin (1979) are followed in the use of the name.Gosling (1984) suggest in a recent review that M. galloprovincialis could be at most a variety of M. edulis. [details]
