Classification Just when Neanthes of Kinberg was first used as a subgenus in Nereis has not been fully researched. However, Saint-Joseph (1898: 288) has a usage including Neanthes in Nereis when describing Neanthes perrieri, although he does not use the species-level combination of Nereis (Neanthes) perrieri. Later there is an example from Horst (1908) [details]
