Nomenclature The variety was erected by Von Lendenfeld for the original specimen described by Thiele from Yogashima, Japan, approximate coordinates 34.75°N 137.06°E (collected by Döderlein). When Thiele created the var. clavigera, he implicitly erected a nominotypical variety for the Yogashima material, and this has to be named the same as the species, i.e. Geodia variospiculosa var. variospiculosa (ICZN art. 47.1). Von Lendenfeld’s var. typica is a junior synonym of that variety. As proposed by Van Soest (2024: 57), both are to be merged with the species Geodia variospiculosa Thiele, 1898. [details]
