Distribution West Atlantic from 32°N to 23°S. Reported from coastal waters of Bermuda, Bahamas, Caribbean, Curacao, Gulf of Mexico, Brazilian coast off Cabo Frio. [details]
Habitat near mangroves and gorgonians; on bottom of coarse calcareous sand; from the sea-anemone Bartholomea annulata; in large shoals on reef tops; in looser aggregations on deep reefs; adults seem to aggregate in the vicinity of diadema antillarum, Gorgonia sp. and coral heads and in the shade of large immobile objects; also known as an associate of sponges (Agelas, callyspongia, Ircinia) and corals (Madracis, Oculina, and Lophogorgia) [details]
