Alien species The origin of red alga Antithamnionella ternifolia is unclear however there is speculation that the algae comes from the Southern hemisphere. The species might have found its way to Europe- and spread itself further- by clinging to ship’s hulls and ropes. In Belgium the red alga was first reported in the Ostend Sluice dock, in 1970. The species grows on almost any type of hard substrate and reproduces fast, two factors contributing to its success.
