Taxonomy Recent examination of the presumed type of Ceratella labyrinthica (MCZ 6046) revealed that this is a dry, and thus unrecognizable, specimen of Solanderia (Cnidaria, Hydrozoa), as assumed by Vervoort (1962). The complication is that the Hyatt material in MCZ bears the label name Ceratella dekitellensis, not labyrinthica. Locality (Mauritius) and collector (Pyke) are the same as quoted in Hyatt's paper, so it is likely that Hyatt changed his mind about the name when publishing the actual description. It is here assumed that the MCZ specimen is the type material of C. labyrinthica, making Ceratella labyrinthica a member of the phylum Cnidaria, not a sponge.
The MCZ collection also contains the material referred to and depicted by Hyatt as Ceratella spec., locality Cape of Good Hope. This too, is a likely Solanderia, and not a sponge. [details]
