Etymology Authors: "Heterospio bathyala is named from the Greek, bathys, for deep, denoting the bathyal depths from which this species was collected." It is not clear why there is an 'a' ending added and 'bathyala' appears to be a usage unique to this context. Also bathyal is a depth term more usually applied to the pelagic depths of 1000-4000 m and H. bathyala has benthic records at the upper end of that range at only 800 to 1500 m. [details]
