Classification The name Silicea was proposed for all sponges with skeleton made up of siliceous spicules combining the two classes Hexactinellida and Demospongiae. However, its original content included also the class Homoscleromorpha, which contains species with siliceous spicules but is no longer considered to be in the same subphylum because its affiliation is closer to Calcarea than to Demospongiae. The name is still used in Paleontology and in recent studies with the addition of 'sensu stricto' to indicate the two classes Hexactinellida and Demospongiae, without Homoscleromorpha. So far there is no name proposed for the sister subphylum which contains the classes Homoscleromorpha and Calcarea. The name Silicea is confusing and should be replaced. For the time being we do not list the name Silicea as a valid taxon in Porifera. [details]
