Diagnosis The revision of Tedania of Desqueyroux-Faúndez & Van Soest (1986) (followed by the Systema Porifera treatment by Van Soest, 2002) distinguished three subgenera in Tedania (Tedania, Tedaniopsis and Trachytedania). Since then, additional reviews by e.g. Cristobo & Urgorri (2001) proposed to restore Trachytedania as an accepted genus, characterized by spined choanosomal styles. Consequently, some species assigned by Desqueyroux-Faúndez & Van Soest (1996) to Tedania (Trachytedania) lacking spined styles had to be reallocated. This concerns Tedania gurjanovae Koltun, 1958 and Tedania mucosa Thiele, 1905. These are now rassigned to Tedania (Tedaniopsis) on the basis of the possession of mucronate tornotes. As a consequence, the diagnosis of Tedaniopsis no longer emphasizes large megasclere sizes. [details]
