Synonymy The variety was described by Von Lendenfeld from Suno Saki, Honshu Island, Sagami Bay, Japan, Albatross Stat. 3758, approximate coordinates 34.9833°N 139.75°E, depth 95–134 m (holotype USNM 8385). Von Lendenfeld made extensive comparisons of the spicules of four of the varieties, but all appeared subject to infraspecific variation. As proposed by Van Soest (2024: 57) the variety is to be merged with the species Geodia variospiculosa Thiele, 1898. [details]
