Homonymy The species was described by Hoshino from Uchinoura, Japan, 31.2417°N 131.0833°E, depth 15 m (holotype Mukaishima Marine Biological Station, MMBS SAT 063). The name combination is a junior primary homonym of Aaptos aaptos var. nigra Topsent, 1934 (and of the unavailable Aaptos aaptos var. nigra Lévi, 1961b) (q.v.). The difference of niger and nigra is insufficient to avoid homonymy as it is based on a Hoshino's failure to apply the agreement in gender rule (ICZN art. 32.1). Hoshino’s name must be replaced (ICZN art. 60) to remove the homonymy and Aaptos hoshinoi nom.nov. was proposed by Van Soest (2024: 80) accordingly. [details]
