Nomenclature Nude name in Lightfoot (1786); as the name first appeared in print there, it cannot be adopted out of synonymy in Dillwyn (1817: 583), as Turner attempted to do (ICZN Article 11.6). If Buccinum maculosum were attributable to Dillwym 1817, it would be preoccupied by Gmelin, 1791, as pointed out by Altena (1975) in adopting Tonna pennata as a replacement, and by Buccinum maculosum Martyn, 1784, which was conserved by ICZN Opinion 479 (1959).
