Nomenclature According to Van Soest & Hajdu (2002, p. 672) the genus name was probably meant to be Raphiodesma, a name subsequently used for several species in Bowerbank (1874). No explanation was offered by Bowerbank, but in the posthumously appeared volume (Bowerbank, 1882) Norman indicated (p. 162) that the two are synonyms and the type of Raphioderma, R. coacervataRaphiodesma lingua. The name Raphioderma thus is an inadvertent misspelling of Raphiodesma, but it technically technically takes priority over Raphiodesma. Fortunately both names are junior to Gray's Mycale, so there is no nomenclatorial issue. [details]
