Identification This is a problematic sponge because it probably refers to the filaments of the genus Ircinia. The description by Carter (1876: 232, also 1890: 564) is made under the name Hircinia without naming a species, but the following sentences state that the sponge is 'entirely replaced by the alga Spongiophaga communis'. An alga occurring at 673 m depth (Porcupine Exp. stat. 25) is unlikely, so the name likely refers to an Ircinia sponge, of which the name has subsequently been combined with 'alga' as Hircinia communis. Later (1885), this combination was used again by Carter (1885c) for an Australian sponge referred to the genus Hyrtios by Hooper & Wiedenmayer, 1994. This was subsequently assigned to Psammopemma by Row, 1911 for a Red Sea record of the species. Psammopemma is a junior synonym of Psammoclema. The 1885 Hircinia communis is clearly different from the 1876 record. The present record is considered incertae sedis and a nomen oblitum. Despite being a junior homonym, Carter's (1885) name combination thus can be maintained as available. [details]
