Homonymy This is a senior homonym of Spongia lobata Montagu, 1818. Since Esper's combination is likely a junior synonym of Isodictya palmata (Ellis & Solander, 1786) and has not been in use as a valid name since before 1899, it meets the conditions of art. 23.9.1,1. as a nomen oblitum, while Montagu's combination is widely used for the sponge Amphilectus lobatus (Montagu, 1814) and but it is unlikely to meet the condition of art. 23.9.1.2. as a nomen protectum, because there are many competing combinations and its main use as A. lobatus is relatively recent (1992). Van Soest & Hooper (2020) proposed to use Amphilectus ovulum (Schmidt, 1870) as a replacement name. [details]
