Nomenclature Lendenfeld (1888: 197) cites Marshall (1880) as the author of this variety, but gives Psammascus decipiens Marshall, 1880 as a synonym, while also including Dysidea tubulosa Carter, 1882 as an additional synonym. There is no Psammascus tubaria in Marshall's paper and material of the only Psammascus described (P. decipiens) has not been found, so Lendenfeld's name is to be used as authored by Lendenfeld. Wiedenmayer (1989) examined Lendenfeld's material, including the varieties S.a. tubaria and S.a. flabellum and considered all to be the same species. One of the varieties should be indicated as typical, which would then have to be called Sigmatella australis australis, and assigned to the synonymy of S. australis. So far this has not yet been done. [details]
