Irinaxine miniata n.g., n.sp. and Quadrivalvula assymetrica n.g., n.sp. found on the gills of Oxyporhamphus convexus caught in the Indian and Pacific oceans are described and figured. Both new genera are placed in the Gastrocotylinae. Irinaxine resembles Pseudaxine in the shape of the opisthaptor and in the paired dorso-lateral vaginal openings but is characterized by the structure of the clamps, with the lateral sclerites markedly displaced upwards from the base of the median spring. The type and only species of the genus, I. miniata, is smaller than members of Pseudaxine and has fewer clamps (14 to 16). The general appearance of the clamps resembles that of members of Engraulicola but these genera are differentiated in the shape of the opisthaptor and in the vagina. Quadrivalvula differs from all Gastrocotylinae with cup-shaped clamps in the structure of the clamp skeleton which consists of 5 sclerites, 2 unpaired, formed by the fusion of paired dorso-lateral and accessory sclerites. The shape of the clamps resembles that of Cypselurobranchitrema spilonopteri. Q. assymetrica, the type and only species (of which 10 mature and 6 immature specimens were examined) has a constant number of clamps (4) which is uncharacteristic for Gastrocotylinae. Comparison of the skeletal structures of the clamps found in the subfamily demonstrates their basic similarities. The gradual derivation of the cup-shaped clamp of Quadrivalvula and some other species (all parasitic in fast-swimming fishes) from the usual gastrocotyline clamp is described.
