Description The skeleton of Galaxea is very distinctive. Corallites are extremely plocoid, though in this species they are usually smaller than in G. fascicularis. The 2-10 mm tall cylinders are 3-5 mm in diameter and are set into a flat and rather blistery coenosteum. The corallites are well spaced. There are 8-12 protuberant primary septa, projecting a further 2 - 3 mm above the corallite wall. During the daytime, pale tentacles protrude. Colonies of this species may exceed a metre in diameter, forming cushions, or are encrusting to sub-massive, or may develop spires and columns (Sheppard, 1998).
Colonies are submassive, columnar or encrusting, with uniform corallites 3-4.5 mm in diameter. Usually eight to 12 septa reach the corallite centre. Polyps are seldom extended during the day. Colour: usually pink, grey, green or brown. Abundance: common in any habitat protected from very strong wave action. Encrusting colonies may exceed 2 m in diameter in turbid water (Veron, 1986<>). [details]
