Description This has small colonies which rarely exceed 30 cm across; they almost always comprise a single thick and fairly dense bracket or plate which projects downwards, lying parallel to the reef surface from an attachment point at the top. Calices are monocentric, resembling Goniastrea, and there is a tendency to run into meandroid series only near the edges of rapidly growing leaves. Walls are low, rounded and very broad relative to the calice width. Merulina scheeri lives in mid to deep water depths on all reef slopes. It grows well in conditions of poor light, whether because of depth or sediment, and is a constant component of low diversity areas in moderately deep, silted slopes. It is usually only found in shallow water where this is very sheltered. In the Red Sea, it occupies the same niche as Leptoseris and Pachyseris species. In several hundred examples seen underwater, only a very small minority showed the irregular, leafy or sub-ramose shapes common in M. ampliata colonies. (Sheppard, 1998 <308>) [details]
