Paracypris has been a conceptually monotypic genus. The zoological concept of the genus has been based solely on the female of the type species, Paracypris polita , for which no male has yet been described. Paracypris early became a paleontological dumping ground for hundreds of fossil species, most of which belong in other genera or families. Two more living species have become available to supplement our knowledge of the soft anatomy of Paracypris . Maddocks described P. crispa from Bermuda and P. bensoni n. sp. is described below. Together with a few species known chiefly from carapace characters, they provide improved taxonomic coherence for this important and geologically ancient genus
