Eighty-eight species of Ostracoda were recovered from dry sediments of the outer shelf and upper bathyal zone along the continental margin off Rio Grande do Sul State, between Rio Grande (Lat. 32°02’S) and Santa Marta Cape (Lat. 28°38’S). The families Cytheruridae, Trachyleberididae, Eucytheridae, Hemicytheridae, Bairdiidae, Krithidae, and Pontocyprididae are the most diversified throughout the study area, whereas the Bairdiidae, Trachyleberididae and Thaerocytheridae constitute the ubiquitous fauna. The taphonomic study of the Ostracoda allowed the recognition of autochthonous vs. allochthonous assemblages, and therefore, it was possible to relate the distribution pattern of these microcrustaceans to the different water masses that occur in this area.
