Description Colour in life: mostly agrees with Sloan et al. (in press) but some lateral interradial areas red-brown and bands of this colour on the arms may extend over three segments. Uniform dull grey or grey-green overall, radial shields dark brown (Sloan et al., 1979). Description: arm length to 18 cm, disc diameter to 4.2 cm. Similar to O. gorgonia with small, round radial shields exposed. Disc pale grey to green with radial shields dark brown. Arms banded. Habitat: under coral in lagoons and shallow reef areas.
Also distributed in Maldive area, Ceylon, East Indies, north Australia, Philippine, China and south Japan (Clark & Rowe, 1971); Australia (Rowe & Gates, 1995).
General distribution: WIO to W Pacific (Richmond, 1998); tropical, Indo-west-central Pacific Ocean, depth range 0-55 m. (Rowe & Gates, 1995).
Ecology: benthic, inshore, continental shelf (Rowe & Gates, 1995). [details]
