Alien species The common cord-grass Spartina townsendii var. anglica originates from Southern England. It is a hybrid of the European indigenous Spartina maritima the North American Spartina alterniflora. Originally, the common cord-grass was planted in mass for land reclamation and sediment binding. The species proved to be very invasive and caused a strong change in mudflat- and salt marsh vegetation, resulting in a lower ecological value of this rare coastal habitat. [details]
