Taxonomy This is a replacement name for the preoccupied Hircinia ramosa sensu de Laubenfels, 1934 (not Keller, 1889). Remarkably, de Laubenfels himself (1948) reverted this decision and assigned I. dickinsoni to the synonymy of Keller's species. It appears unlikely that the shallow-water Red Sea coral reef species is the same as the deep-water Portorican I. dickinsoni, so here I. dickinsoni is considered valid. However, this species needs to be compared with Hircinia (=Ircinia) ectofibrosa George & Wilson, 1919, which may be a senior synonym. [details]
