The thecal characteristics of the genus Oxytoxum Stein are redefined on the basis of detailed studies, using scanning electron microscopy, of a large amount of planktonic material mainly from the North Atlantic. The plate pattern or tabulation is clearly shown to be (using a modified Kofoidean notation): PO, 5', 6", 5C, 4S, 5'", 1I I U. Descriptions are given for 19 species, two of which are new, O. pyramidale and O. strophalatum. A further 16 existing taxa are brought into synonymy. In this revision the genus is divided into four sections for which the characteristics of the sulcus are important: Sects Excavatum, Sulcatum, Oxytoxum and Pyrgidium. The paper concludes with a key to the species studied and a listing of the taxa covered.
