Additional information Presently known from tropical and subtropical East Asia and from Victoria, Australia. It is difficult to identify and can be expected to be much more widely distributed, at least in warmer waters. Harmful effect Production of domoic avid has been confirmed by several methods (Kotaki et al 2000, 2005, 2006, Tan et al 2016).
* N. navis-varingica produces domoic acid in amounts similar to highly toxic Pseudo-nitzschia species. * It produces both domoic acid (DA) and the derivatives isodomoic acid A (IA) and B (IB). Strains belong to five different toxin profile types: DA, DA-IB, IB, IA-IB, DA-IA-IB. Trace amounts of other isomers have been found [details]
Identification Electron microscopy or molecular sequences are needed for correct identification.
* The cell is indented in the middle in girdle view, has a moderately eccentric raphe and a weak longitudinal fold on the valve. Most characteristic is silica ornamentation on the mantle and the wall of the raphe canal as vermiform ridges, and as silica warts on the girdle bands. See Lundholm et al 2000.
