Taxonomy The description by Linnaeus, 1759 (partially taken over from Linneaus, 1753: 1170 and Van Royen, 1740: 522) refers to a black branch, rough and tenacious/hard, with oscules along the branch, apparently collected in Australia, The name is quoted by Pallas (1766) as a synonym of his Spongia rubens. If this is accepted then Spongia rubens becomes a junior synonym of S. nodosa. No material survived of both. Pallas cited as first image Imperato' s (1599) image of "Alcyonio foraminoso". This is likely from the Mediterranean. [details]
