A bonellid worm was collected from the coral reefs of Pirotan Island, Gulf of Kutch, India, in June 1956. It was previously incorrectly reported as Ikedella misakiensis Ikeda (Gideon et al., '56, '57). A detailed study on the morphology of this animal, which is recorded in this paper, reveals that it is a new species of the genus Acanthobonellia Fisher ('48). The name we have given this new species is pirotanensis. It resembles the genus Acanthobonellia in having minute setae instead of the two typical ventral ventral books, direct connection of the dorsal blood vessel and neuro-intestinal vessel by the heart, and a large male without any setae. A. pirotanensis differs from Bonellia (Acanthobonellia) miyajimai Ikeda, the only other species recorded in the genus Acanthobonellia, in the following major characters: (1) Fewer setae (2 to 14) which are embedded in a single muscular pad. (2) The heart is long (2 to 3 cm), tubular and encircles the terminal part of the pre-siphonal intestine, while in miyajimai it is short and triangular and only embraces the terminal part of the oesophagus. (3) The males in both species differ in the structure of the body-wall and the floating oval bodies of the coelomic fluid.
