Taxonomy If Plumularia mutabilis is used in the new combination Nemertesia mutabilis, it becomes a secondary homonym of Nemertesia mutabilis (Fraser, 1948). Ramil & Vervoort (2006) therefore proposed the new name Nemertesia californica for this species.
The taxonoic position of this species is by no means clear. Ramil & Vervoort (2006) placed it in the genus Nemertesia despite the plumes having only two rows of hydrocladia. It could as well be regarded as a Plumularia species. If so, Frasers original name Plumularia mutabilis Fraser, 1948 would remain valid.
