From editor or global species database
Authority Pre-Linnaean, and first author to use Eruca marina may have been earlier than Ruysch 1721. Barrelier (1714) has a plate, and used the descriptive label of "Eruca echinata, marina, griseo fusca" which translates as "The spiny marine caterpillar, dark gray" which is an accurate description for the time of an Aphrodita. Ruysch used a label more like a Linnaean binominal. [details]Editor's comment Hartman catalogue (p. 55) lists two Eruca species names but without a genus heading. This was the treatment she gave to genera names which either did not belong in Annelida, or did not belong to the family in which the species were listed. Both names she took from a Claparède synonymy for Aphrodita aculeata, and she lists them as 'Barrelier in" and "Seba in" Claparède. This is her formula for indicating she found mention of the names there, NOT that they were described in Claparède. They are pre-Linnaean curiosities and merely listed in synonymy and are not valid usages, and not given validity by the occurrence in Claparède. [details]
